AMALAKEE KALPAM
It requires the most favourable occasion to carry out the kalpam (treatment) and the duration between Edavam (May) and ‘Karkkidakam’ (July) is prescribed as the best accordingly. The person who subjects to the ‘kalpam’ should be free from diseases like diabetes, cancers, T.B, Asthma, Cardiac problems, Mental illness and other epidemics. He/she must be an age between 40 and 55. The venue must specially and carefully be selected in the outskirts of jungle and is free from even the casual disturbance of wild animals. It should be less populous but inhabitable. The environment should be cam and quiet with no flecks of slum and far away from the reaches of sea-winds. Temporary housing facility for the physicians and their assistants should also be provided there. The hut in which the person undergoes the “kalpam” must be of 25ft length, 12ft. width and 15ft. height and to be roofed with grass or coconut fonts.
The tub-like cot in which the person is to lie must be in the shape of boat which resembles the “thyladroni” of the past time. It is of 5ft. width, 10ft. length and 2.5ft. Height. It can be placed on the floor with no shake at all. If the person inside the tub happens to urinate, it will go outside for which a small outlet is kept at the bottom of it. But it should be remained closed with a piece of “chamatha” wood itself whenever it should be higher than the other end.
The most appropriate time for the collecting raw materials for medicines is between “Thulam” 15 and “Vrichikam” 10 (Malayalam calendar).Collect 4 sacks full of ripe and undamaged gooseberries. Then wash them with pure water. Spread them on clean grass mats and expose to sunlight and to snow. This must e continued day and night alike for 41 days. Then they are collected in cloth bags and keep them in safer place for 12 months, subjecting them to the above process now and then. Then take them out and grind by natural means. It must be carried out carefully until pure powder is obtained. These powders is then mixed up with wild honey and fill this mixture in the hollow place purposefully made inside small pieces of “chamatha” wood and close them with the same chamatha itself. Fill up this mixture in maximum chamatha pieces.
Collect 4 sackul of pure dung of wild animals which live on wild grass and plants. Dig some deep furrows in the proximity of the ashram (the so called hut specially built for the treatment). Fill the furrows with the chamatha sticks packed with the medical mixture and then fill soil above them. Put the dung over those filled up furrows and set it fire. Take out the sticks when they are found properly baked. Break down those sticks to collect the medicinal mixture inside. Mix it with some more honey if moister loss is found with. The particular person has already been subjected to different treatment like Nasya, Vamana, Virechana and Swedana as the preliminary steps to the kalpam. The treatment should be started on the auspicious occasion with the accompaniment of “Nirapara” and “Nilavilakku” (traditional means of an auspicious opening with spiritual fervour). This is carried out under the auspicious of eminent physicians with the help of their assistants. The person is them balm with the above mentioned mixture all over the body except the nine holes(navadwara) and place him into the “droni” (tub).
Then start to give his/her the ‘special rasa’ (oral medicine) specially made. Two spoonful of the ‘Rasa’ twice a day is allowable. The raw materials for this solution are wild gooseberry and wild honey. It is prepared by squeezing the baked mixture of wild gooseberry and wild honey kept inside “chamatha” sticks by the fire set on wild dung. This process of the kalpam should be continued for the next 21 days. After breaking the ‘dronic’ take out the person kept inside and start to give him medical drink (water boiled with small pieces of venga together with dried ginger and coriander). Then expose him to calm and soft breeze, but he/she should be kept away from the ordinary environment. And broad sunlight. In other words, the treated person should be kept inside the hut for the next 90days.From the next days onwards, after he/she has been taken out of the “dronic” he may be given drinking water boiled with venga pieces and coriander, and the specially made “Chavanaprass rasayana” prepared by eminent physicians in accordance with the medical scripts. But both these drinks and rasayana should be supplied only as per the conditions of thirst and hunger and especially that of the body of the person.
As a result, it can be seen that the outermost layer of the skin is fallen off within 30 days, and instead a layer of fresh, gold complexioned skin will be found. Then very characteristics of old age give way to youth hood. New set of nails will be created in the place of old ones. Fantastically enough, condition of health will thoroughly be changed, and it will be felt four times greater than that of the state before the ‘kalpam’. Likewise sexual efficiency will be enhanced to eight times. The vitality and vigorousness of the physique and the mind will wonderfully be felt. The renovation of the body from the tip to toe has its unavoidable extension on one’s spirit and personality too is not an excess so far as the unpredictable and indescribable merits and aftermaths of the kalpam is concerned. In short, this ‘Amalkee kalpam’ is one of the most efficacious treatments in promoting rejuvenation as highlighted by the living evidences from the bygone era.
